Drum roll please…
Next week, on 9 February, my book Beyond Burnout: How to Spot it, Stop It and Stamp it Out is being released into all good bookstores. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know it’s been an epic journey to write and publish this book. And while it’s rewarding to see it finished and hold an advance copy in my hands, the thing I’m most excited about is being able to get it out to you.

And if you want to be super organised and call yourself an ‘early adopter’, you can preorder it now from Mighty Ape or The Nile. But first…
Why you should read this book
(apart from the fact that Sir John Kirwan loved it so much that he wrote the foreword – top bloke!)
This book is not just for stressed out, burnt out executives – although it will be super handy if that’s you. It is for those of you who know there must be ways to achieve productivity and effectiveness– but not burn people out (including yourself) in the process.
Burnout is not a new phenomenon – but it’s a growing one. It’s a big problem in our workplaces, regardless of which industry or profession you’re in, or where you sit on the organisational ladder. And it’s a problem that’s getting bigger by the year. A recent Gallup study of nearly 7,500 full-time employees found that 23% reported feeling burned out at work very often or always, while an additional 44% reported feeling burned out sometimes. That means about two-thirds of full-time workers experience burnout on the job.
Although there are already books on burnout, most of them are geared solely towards the individual who’s suffering from it. This is a bit like treating the sick fish, when it’s the water that’s contaminated.
This book is different. It tackles the root causes of burnout –and it helps individuals, leaders and companies create the conditions that help organisations and people thrive. It also provides practical tools for individuals, leaders and organisations to buffer against the enormous costs that burnout creates.
Here’s what you’ll learn
You’ll learn about the significant costs of burnout, both to people and organisations. Then, we’ll shatter some common burnout myths.
We take a closer look at what burnout is – and what it isn’t, examining the difference between burnout and stress, and outlining why stress itself isn’t the problem.
We also explore who is most likely to suffer from burnout and who is more likely to be immune.
(Spoiler alert: anyone can suffer from burnout and no-one is immune. That said, there are certain professions, industries and personality types who are more at risk than others.)
That’s before we even get to the strategies and practical tips and tools to enable you to spot it, stop it and stamp it out.
So, go check out the preorder page now. Don’t miss out!
If you’ve already preordered the book, thank you! And I hope you will help me to spread the word :).
As our world continues to grapple with the myriad of challenges that 2020 heralded, now more than ever is the time to make our places of work where people, as well as profits, thrive.
Why are preorders so important? Publishers and media outlets pay a lot of attention to preorders as a diagnostic of interest in a book. That perception can then become a self-fulfilling prophecy, because books that seem to be drawing early interest get more attention and resources. So, if we want to change the world of work, it starts now – and I need your help!
