I have only one major criticism of this book.
It is written for women only.
There are so many leadership gems in Spiraling Upward: The 5 Co-Creative Powers for Women on the Rise, which are as applicable to men as they are to women, so I feel like men are really missing out here!
I read a plethora of leadership books each year. How much each one resonates is indicated by the amount of pencil underlining that takes place. In this instance, almost every page had me reaching for the HB.
Corporate coach, Wendy Wallbridge, expertly leads us through the three ‘turnings’ of initiation, aspiration and inspiration, in our journey to becoming better leaders. She introduces us to the 5 co-creative powers – energy, mind, feelings, speech and action; and describes how/why women tuning into these concepts, can unlock their power, enabling them to achieve success on their own terms.
Wallbridge cuts though the clutter of leadership books by striking a balance between innovative concepts, personal stories and practical exercises. It’s as if you are having a conversation with this kind and wise woman; your own personal coaching session even.
Here are just a few of the many gems that I enthusiastically underlined with said pencil:
“You are pregnant with a seed of creation that is as unique to you as your fingerprints – original to only you and yet with a life of its own. Your job, as a co-creator, is to nurture this seed in you and to continue to open to the truth of who you are, which is wanted and needed in the world.”
“Actions, of course, are crucial to changing our lives, but if we aren’t addressing the context within which all actions take place, we create superficial change, not transformation.”
“A need to please can sabotage your ability to speak up and stand up for what you know…authentic speaking is sharing your inner experience without an agenda.” This is a big one for many women I coach (and me too, truth be told ;-))
So, if you are a woman leader, or even a woman in general, click here to buy this book, or on the link below.
And if you’re a male leader, and you’re comfortable in your masculinity, you could do worse than having a wee squizz at Spiraling Upward too.
